[2020-08-19 10:00 PDT] VCEA IT General Scheduled Maintenance – support.vcea.wsu.edu migration

As of ~10:00 AM, August 19th, 2020, VCEA ISG has moved its support ticket system to WSU’s Jira instance. This change will help streamline requests from customers, including those that begin with another Helpdesk (such as the Crimson Service Desk).

Make sure to update your bookmarks! Our new Jira portal is located at https://jira.esg.wsu.edu/plugins/servlet/desk/portal/95 and will require you to log into your WSU account to access it. This site replaces support.vcea.wsu.edu, although that site will still redirect you to our new Jira portal.

If you had any open tickets in progress with VCEA ISG prior to the migration, you’ll probably be receiving an email letting you know that your ticket is being moved over to Jira.

Update (08/13/2020 – 18:14 PT)
** These maintenance items are complete **

WSU FacOps completed some work today, but identified new flow/valve issues that will likely result in future scheduled maintenance/work.

All planned outage systems/servers were brought back online today by 17:45 PDT; those with a scheduler are flowing all held jobs through the queue.

As always, if anyone encounters problems with related systems, they should contact the VCEA Helpdesk online at support.vcea.wsu.edu, by email at support.vcea@wsu.edu, or by phone at (509)335-6773.

WSU Softphone request

WSU Central IT is waiving the fees for adding your WSU number as a soft phone.  A “softphone” (or SIP phone) redirects your WSU phone number to any SIP client (a software app on your computer or smart phone).   This will be very valuable so that you do not have to publish your cell phone number or return calls from your cell number.  You can use an app, such as Google Voice, to receive or make calls.  They will all come to / from your WSU number.

If you would like to have this feature enabled for your WSU phone, we will need some info from you:

PLEASE SEND US AN EMAIL at support.vcea@wsu.edu with the subject line SIP PHONE REQUEST.  This will let us collect all the information in an organized fashion.  Please include the information shown below.  We will work on instructions on how to set it up once it is created.

Your support ticket should include the following information:
WSU Phone #, Name, WSU Network ID (NID) , Email address
(Example: 509-335-1157, Tony Burt, tony.burt, tony.burt@wsu.edu)

COVID-19, VCEA IT & YOU

Life is a little chaotic right at the moment. Anxiety surrounding COVID-19 is high. We’re hoping that we can help by collecting some of the information and giving you a one stop shop. Here you will find links to tutorials, knowledge base articles, and FAQs for all things video conferencing (Blackboard / Zoom / Panopto) and working remotely for VCEA. Most importantly, this page has been tested and is Negative for COVID-19.

WSU COVID-19 Resources

Video Conferencing

Various WSU groups have made tutorials, knowledge base articles and work instructions on how to use Blackboard, Panopto and Zoom for delivering class content remotely. We’ve gathered as much of the information as we can find and put it all in one place.

Working Remotely

(utilizing WSU SSL VPN, Guacamole and Softphones)

Connection to your PC / Mac

Although most of us will still be showing up to work as scheduled, some of us may have a need to work from home for various reasons. Your friendly VCEA IT department has rolled out a remote desktop portal, called Guacamole, that provides a secure tunnel for you to connect from a device at home (or wherever you quarantine yourself) to your computer at WSU. All you need is a device with a web browser, however mouse and keyboard support is highly recommended.

If your school director or supervisor approves you to work from home and you need to be able to access local resources within VCEA, such as shared drives or printers, Guacamole might just be the solution you need. It protects WSU data and yourself by not transmitting or storing the data remotely; you’re merely looking at them remotely. Guacamole isn’t just a tasty treat! Get a hold of us to setup your access and have a look at our tutorial for connecting to your workstation at WSU.

Softphone Use

Softphones are used when you want to use a Voice over IP (VoIP) application on your computer, tablet or smartphone to make and receive calls from your WSU number. This is very useful in keeping your personal cell phone number private. You don’t even have to use a cell phone at all; you can use an application on your computer to answer calls during the work day.
Currently, WSU is recommending Citrix Jabber for use on PCs and Macs. You can find it in your App Stores or at the link provided below.
